Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to attempt to detect modifier loci in schizophrenia. These are defined as genetic loci that influence the clinical form of the disease without necessarily altering susceptibility to it. This project would build on skills the applicant has acquired in the last two years in quantitative trait loci analysis while training at the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. The applicant also seeks to obtain training in molecular genetics laboratory techniques, joining the laboratory of Brien Riley, PhD and X. Chen, PhD, and intends to perform new genotyping himself. The applicant intends to perform all analyses himself, with the supervision of Michael Neale, PhD, and Kenneth S. Kendler, MD. The applicant hopes to obtain the skills required to pursue psychiatric genetics research as an independent investigator. As he already has substantial experience as a clinician and teacher in an academic psychiatry department, he would like to build on this as a researcher, integrating basic and clinical science. This proposal would do precisely that by applying molecular and statistical genetics methodology to understanding the genetic basis of the clinical heterogeneity of schizophrenia.
